Delft – The Netherlands – A Whole Lot Farther – Part 32 min read time

Sometimes when you are traveling the unexpected can be wonderful.   Our group decided at the last minute that we did not want to go to the village that had been planned due to some possible weather issues.  So we discussed other possibilities and decided to try the city of Delft, South Holland.

Our Dutch photographer friend had not even been there before.   So we drove to the southwest part of the Netherlands to the birthplace of Vermeer & where the world famous Delft ceramics are made.  We were not disappointed.  This city has much to see, lots of shopping and some great food!

There was a fairly large square in the center of the town that had all kinds of shops & restaurants around it.  At one end was city hall and the other was a large church.

 

Some in our group decided to climb up the very tall New Church tower, some went off to the factory where the beautiful blue & white Delft ceramics are made and some of us just wandered around the square and the side streets.  The buildings were all very colorful and interesting.

Delft has canals just like most of the Netherlands.

We ended the day at one of the many restaurants (Proeverij De Waag) just off the square and getting the Chef’s Surprise meal resulted in some of the best & most artistic food I have ever eaten.   It was definitely an adventure in eating for all of us!

I just wish I had had more time to see more of this beautiful & historic city.  Maybe someday I will get a chance to go back!
