Get away from the crowded roadside waterfalls in the south of Iceland in favor of a secluded pool, filled from a nearby hot spring, surrounded by mountains, that feels like it’s in the middle of No-where-ville…Let’s go on an adventure, shall we?!You will have to endure a long bumpy ride that might take a tire or two out. You will also have to figure out how to cross a large ICE cold waterfall or river without falling in. You might even have to go it alone without the GPS because it might get you lost. But it’s alll worth it. : ) For this…
Seljavallalaug (Icelandic, what a language!)
Your own little pool that even comes with a lovely top of the line changing room! How fancy! It’s man-made but the water runs from a natural hot spring in the mountains. You might have to share with other adventurers, but jump on in and make new friends, these people probably know where it’s at since they have arrived at the same place you are with the same idea!
It was cold and rainy (what’s new Iceland?!) but the clouds and mist lent a definite charm to the area, gave it some character, some moodiness. It also helps keep the crowds away! The pool was warm, but water you have to cross to get there was incredibly cold. The way the path we took works is that you have to cross a large to medium size waterfall on the way there and a smaller but wider river on the way back. At the river, after getting our fill of this amazing location, I gave up looking for a place to cross in my warm socks and hiking boots, took them off, and plunged through the skin numbing waters as quick as I could. Don’t worry, I think I’m just now getting back feeling in my small toe!
I found this little playing card wedged in the ceiling of the shelter that looks like it has been there since the place was built! Cool!
Here there are no showers, no bathrooms, just you, the pool, and mother nature….relax and enjoy!
